The group stage is where the 2026 World Cup sorts its 48 teams down to the 32 who reach the knockouts. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four, lettered A through L. Each team plays the other three in its group once, earning three points for a win and one for a draw. The two best teams in every group go through automatically, and the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups join them, which is what makes even the third spot worth fighting for this year. The tables below show exactly where every group stands right now.

When two teams are still level after that, FIFA applies further tie-breakers, including the result of the match between them and, ultimately, fair-play and drawing of lots. Those final tie-breaks are decided by the organisers, so where two teams are genuinely inseparable here, treat their order as provisional rather than final.
